Colors by Kim Staff Testimonials

Michele Burgess, Salon Coordinator and Licensed Nail Tech

The Summit Systems has had such a positive effect on our salon. We have increased energy. Our core attitude is one of success and teamwork on all levels of the salon. Balance and structure allows our salon to run smoothly and efficiently. The system has also introduced us to continuing our education, which our guests have noticed and appreciate greatly. Our leader and owner-Kimberly Mott is there for each team member either by making herself open to questions and concerns, or leading by example .We many talented team members, and now there is purpose, drive, and ambition like never before!

Erin O'Malley, Stylist

When we got our Jump journals I was not sure of how it would work. But after doing my journal every day, I jumped to a Level 1 stylist within the first year. It made me push myself to hit the goals I wanted to achieve by reminding me what I needed to work on. It was simple! I especially like how the journal helps me track my goals for the month, week or the day. It felt great getting that promotion and knowing that I can only go “up” from this point.

"Colors by Kim" Rises Above the Storm

By Misa Chappell for Summit Salon Business Center

“Colors by Kim Hair Salon and Day Spa” is in Trenton, Michigan, just 20 minutes outside of Detroit, the car capital of the world. Owner Kim Mott watched car factories close all around her as she struggled to maintain her own business. Luckily she had initiated key changes in her salon before the real storm hit.

According to Kim, the salon's biggest problem was always “Money! Money! Money!” The salon's income seemed to be going all the time and Kim had no idea where. Even as she hired more stylists and made more income, debt continued to mount. Fear started to rise. “All I had to do was lose so many stylists and I would be unable to pay my bills,” recalls Kim. “How would I take care of my family? How would I pay this debt?”

Kim's fear of losing stylists was crippling, as she knew she could not survive a walkout. Seven new salons opened in the area - in addition to the many that were already there - and Kim didn't want to lose any of her staff to them. She loved owning a business, but lacked confidence in her decisions. She second-guessed her every move. Kim also struggled with managing her time: although she loved working behind the chair, she needed more time to run her business. Not to mention time to have a personal life! According to her, “I felt bad about it all, all the time . . . and as a woman in my 40s, those hormones were killing me with all that pressure!” The demands of juggling her priorities sapped her energy.

One day, Kim expressed her concerns to Tari Pearce from Redken. Tari's response: “You need to go to the Summit!” Kim attended The Summit in 2008 with the support of her DSC Jennifer Williams. Jennifer had long gone way above and beyond for Kim's salon by helping her with things like back bar and retail costs; this time, she sacrificed her own time and money to share The Summit experience with Kim in Tampa.

Since attending The Summit and working with SSBC Consultant Jo Brooke, Colors by Kim is growing, learning and moving forward in a time that many are barely getting by. In this difficult economy, Kim's staff has a keen advantage. Despite the car companies crashing all around the salon, the employees have confidence in the stability of their careers. In the midst of reports of salons closing and changing hands, they have watched their incomes increase. They know that the salon is strong and that when the economy improves, it will be bigger and stronger and rise to lead the other salons and businesses in the area.

There were key Summit initiatives that made a huge impact at Colors by Kim, the first being the Associate Program. Kim enthusiastically embraced the idea to “grow your own, and have those that are successful train the newbies!” Kim is not afraid to lose stylists anymore because she knows how to grow stylists, and is proud to report that she has grown at least four since becoming a Summit salon.

The Budget guidelines were also important to Kim's newfound success. Although she confesses to hating paperwork, Kim has adopted the mantra to “know your numbers!” She has gained control by seeing where the salon was weak and working on those weaker areas, such as overspending.

The Level system has been another boon for Colors by Kim. Giving service providers something to work towards has made a huge difference. The Level system also gave the stylists much-needed confidence about their pricing. “There is nothing like seeing someone jump to the next level and you're the one that helped that to happen,” says Kim. “We have direction: what a difference!”

One of things that initially scared Kim was the cost of The Summit and the cost of the consultant - what if it didn't work after all that time and money, especially when she was short on those things to begin with? But Kim's fears were unfounded. “Don't fear the Summit!” she reports, “I have seen what it can do. I've seen the change in my money, I've seen the change in my employee's money, and I now know that I have something to offer to anyone in this industry! What a gift it is to finally see prosperity on the horizon!”

Kim advises those who say “yes” to The Summit to “do what your consultant tells you to do. Don't just do part of it, do all of it, and do it consistently, and you will see great success and will gain great confidence in what you're doing, who your leading and where you're going. I'm so thankful to my consultant Jo Brook who was more than patient with me and worked with my fear!”

In 2009, Colors by Kim hit a record $500,000 in service and retail sales, and boasts a full staff of 12 stylists, 4 nail techs, a massage therapist and two at the front desk. Kim is proud of her accomplishments. “Not only have I learned how to grow my own stylists, I've learned how to work two stylists out of one station . . . and I can see a new location on the horizon!”
